The Hired Pen

Christmas is coming, the goose is getting fat (nice)

Please do put a penny in the old man’s hat

If you haven’t got a penny, a ha-penny will do

If you haven’t got a ha-penny then God bless you (good)

Eastern Sierra, CA—Santa Claus sightings, Christmas tree decorations, Christmas carols, and bell ringers for the Salvation Army’s Red Kettle donations abound, as the Eastern Sierra settles down for a long winter’s nap, and visits from Santa. There’s only seven days until Santa Claus travels over the High Sierra, and there’s still a chance to bring a little joy to everyone. And, to help you discover other gifts that keep on giving throughout the year, here’s another idea for a unique experience.

LA Kings Ice at Mammoth Lakes, CA State-of-the-art ice skating, hockey, and curling

Residents and visitors to Eastern California have an exceptional opportunity to experience a premier ice-skating rink in the Town of Mammoth Lakes, CA. It was a long-time coming, but it’s here, and open for fun, and families during the winter holidays.

“For more than 20 years, the Town of Mammoth Lakes has been actively searching for a permanent home for an indoor ice rink and multi-use facility – one that would enhance the quality of life for residents and visitors with year-round access to high-quality and innovative indoor recreational programs and activities.

After operating our much-loved outdoor ice rink for over 15 years, the abundant snow, relentless sun, and soaring spring temperatures made it extremely difficult to maintain a quality ice sheet and keep to a consistent schedule. Between digging out from major storms and trying to keep the ice frozen on one of our many bluebird days, it was time to move on.

On April 21, 2021, the Mammoth Lakes Town Council, Planning and Economic Development Commission (PEDC), Parks and Recreation Commission, Town staff and the Mammoth Stars celebrated the groundbreaking for the new Community Recreation Center (CRC) at Mammoth Creek Park. The Facility officially opened to the public on Friday, November 24, 2023.”

“The Community Recreation Center (CRC) is a 40,000 square foot Sprung Performance Arena enclosing the brand new LA Kings Ice at Mammoth Lakes. The CRC will be open and available to the public year-round, with LA Kings Ice operating annually each winter season between the months of October and April. During the summer months, the rink will be transformed into the Mammoth RecZone – a 3-court gymnasium, serving as the hub for the expanding Parks and Recreation Department’s summer camps and programs, as well as a multitude of court sports, events and activities for residents and visitors to Mammoth Lakes. A Sprung Performance Arena was selected by the Town for its affordability, reduced operating and energy expenses and green footprint. Sprung structures are known for their exceptional durability – a necessity in a typical Mammoth Lakes winter – and for their proven long-term performance, quality ice surface, interior brightness, and high ceiling allowing for a multitude of sports.” (Town of Mammoth Lakes)
