Eastern Sierra, CA—The Sierra Roller Hockey League recently celebrated its 30th year in the eastern Sierra, with a tournament at the Tri-County Fairgrounds, in Bishop, CA. Founded in 1993, with a group of dedicated hockey players, their kids, and community members, the league has grown over the years, to include five teams, which played in brackets on Saturday, December 30.
Sarah Gillespie, SRHL board member, said there are more than 200 SRHL members, ranging in age from four years old (Jr. Mites) to adults. Sporting names like the Dusters, Puck It, Cluster Pucks, Team Kubiak, and Team Carpenter, some of the members of the SRHL also play in the LA Kings Ice Hockey League. Gillespie noted that the teams start play at Halloween time, and continue until the end of February, with games and practices held at the Charles Brown Auditorium, at the Tri-County Fairgrounds. The teams do the assembling of the rink, and its a full time commitment to keeping the league going.
The 30th Anniversary Winter Classic Tournament is a wrap, and Team Champions this year, 2023, were Team Carpenter. Congratulations! The Tournament also hosted an auction, with many of the communities’ businesses sponsoring prizes throughout the Tournament. Gillespie said it’s hoped that the Winter Classic Tournament becomes a regular event, and there’s still time to catch the teams playing at the Tri-County Fairgrounds.
